Police said on Wednesday that their festive season operation would continue until the end of the month.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The holiday season was traditionally a high risk period and authorities said they would continue to put pressure on criminals.

Police helicopters were seen at several shopping centres in and around <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Pretoria.

They vowed to maintain a high visibility, saying that their festive season crackdown had already borne fruit.

Last month, three armed robberies were foiled in one day after police acted on tip-offs.

Two suspects were shot and killed during a shootout in Woodmead in northern <city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Johannesburg, while six of their accomplices were arrested.

At the same time, eight men, who allegedly planned to rob the Irene Dairy Farm in Centurion, were taken into custody, while another 25 would-be robbers arrested in Ulundi in KwaZulu Natal.
