The Congress of the People has suspended one of its members in Beaufort West for allegedly abusing young girls.

Current affairs programme Special Assignment aired a programme showing how Terry Oliphant made videos of himself having sex with under-aged girls, including a 15-year-old.

The programme revealed that one of the girls laid a charge of statutory rape against him but he had retained his job at the Social Security Agency.

Oliphant was alleged to have committed the offences three years ago whilst a member of the African National Congress.

The party’s Palesa Morudu said the politician was suspended with immediate effect.

“We were quite horrified by the Special Assignment recording and we ourselves will institute an internal disciplinary process because we really view the actions depicted in the show as despicable and really undermines the integrity of women."
