Five people, including a senior citizen, were shot and wounded during an attempted robbery at a pension pay out point in Mitchell’s Plain in <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Cape Town.

Police said three armed men jumped out of a vehicle and started shooting at security guards who returned fire.

Two of the guards were wounded and it was established that a 73-year-old woman and another bystander were also injured.

Another person was knocked down by the suspects who fled after shooting at a police patrol vehicle.

Police spokesperson Ian Williams said, “Police vehicles then approached the scene and were shot at by the suspects. Police members took cover and returned fire. The suspects then jumped into their vehicles and fled the scene. Police vehicles then followed the suspect’s vehicles but lost track of them in the Kayelitsha area.”
