The death toll from Saturday’s storms in Pietermarizburg have risen to nine.

Over 2 000 people were left destitute after their homes were destroyed by thunderstorms and heavy winds.

Police said that tents, food parcels and blankets were handed out to people who were left homeless following the deadly storm.

Over 300 homes were completely destroyed.

Among the dead was a family of four who was inside their home when lightning struck.

Media 24 offices in Pietermarizburg were also struck and arrangements were made to have The Witness, Ilanga and Daily Sun newspapers printed at their offices in <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?><city w:st="on">Johannesburg and <?xml:namespace prefix="U1"?><city u2:st="on"><place u2:st="on"><city w:st="on"><place w:st="on">Durban.

Residents described the storm as the worst they had ever seen.
