The South African Retail Council has warned that many smaller businesses may struggle to keep their doors open this year. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The credit crunch had already seen shoppers spending less on gifts, clothing and other festive goodies.

The council’s Michael Rodney predicted a tough year ahead.

“In certain centres around the country, certain centres around Cape Town, they are just about holding their own as far as rentals but if the new rentals kick in at the beginning of the year with escalation it looks a bit scary for some of the small guys."
