Cars filled with families as well as busloads of beach-goers were expected to gather at Western Cape beaches on Thursday but provincial traffic spokesperson Roncliffe Dirks warned there would be a visible increase in the number of officers monitoring routes leading to the popular swimming spots.
"Just because of the high influx of vehicles that’s moving to the day camping areas and beaches, they must drive responsibly. If they do have any alcoholic beverages rather stay there or get responsible driver to take them home.”
Officers said no-one would be able to avoid sleeping in a jail cell should they be caught breaking the law or putting others’ safety at risk.
