CAPE TOWN - The State is set to subpoena two police officers who allegedly helped alleged underworld crime boss, Nafiz Modack, intimidate an asset manager for extortion.

A high-profile trial against Modack and his 14 co-accused was adjourned in the Western Cape High Court on Thursday for the State to arrange for the two officers, who are based in Durban, to testify in court.

This after State witness, Shanil Maharaj, claimed he asked Modack to retrieve R2 million from another State witness, an asset manager who can only be identified as "Mister C", following a botched investment.

It is the State's case, that Modack used two police officers to intimidate Mister C by arranging for him to be arrested on the third of April 2020.

Earlier this week, Mister C testified that he was arrested by the K9 unit at his home in Cape Town on fraud charges laid by Maharaj in Durban but the investigation yielded no outcome and the charges were later withdrawn.

Mister C, who has since relocated to Dubai, told the court that Maharaj and one of Modack's co-accused, Jacques Cronje, made constant death threats for him to pay back the money.

Cronje is also charged with kidnapping and intimidating Mister C in an attempt to collect the money on behalf of Modack.

The trial continues.
