JOHANNESBURG - Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen said the party had no regrets over a controversial advert depicting the South African flag burning.

The party has received backlash over the online advertisement this week, with Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa considering taking action against the DA.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has also weighed in on it, calling it an act of treason.

In spite of rife criticism, Steenhuisen said the advert had sparked necessary debate among citizens, examining whether the nation was indeed burning.

"Political adverts, particularly in the last closing weeks of the campaign, have to be tough and robust to get your message across. This is a country that is on fire. But the advert ends with the flag being restored to its full glory. It's not the future we want for South Africa, but it is the future that's going to face us."
