DURBAN - The Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed it has received a letter seeking to have former President Jacob Zuma removed as the face and leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

Former interim party leader, Jabulani Khumalo, wants Zuma to be removed from his position.

In a letter dated 5 May 2024, Khumalo, who registered the party in September 2023 on behalf of Zuma, claims Zuma fired him without following proper procedure.

However, the Electoral Commission said it would not entertain party matters.

The IEC maintains its stance that it will not involve itself in internal matters of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party.

And while the fired Khumalo demands that Zuma be removed as the face of the MK Party, the commission says it only acts on the instruction of the registered leader of a party - in this regard, Zuma.

The party also confirmed Zuma as the rightful leader of the party, something Khumalo disputed.

The MK Party earlier told Eyewitness News that it would comment on the matter after having verified the details of the letter.
