ANCYL condemns Malema comments

The ANCYL says Malema spoke in his personal capacity when he addressed Lonmin mourners.

JOHANNESBURG - The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) on Monday condemned statements made by expelled leader Julius Malema at a memorial service at Lonmin's Marikana mine.

Speaking to mourners last week, the controversial politician said government does not care about them and that officials were “pretenders and cowards”.

He blamed government for not easing the violence at the North West mine, which led to 34 people being gunned down in clashes with police.

The ANCYL said Malema spoke in his personal capacity and was trying to sow divisions within the ANC.

The League distanced itself from his statements, even though it believes Malema will return as president of the organisation.

ANCYL National Executive Committee (NEC) member Abner Mosaase said the Youth League does not do condone actions meant to undermine the ruling party.

The League said there was a lack of leadership from Lonmin management, unions, police and government, in dealing with the incident.

The organisation said it supports the miners in their fight for higher wages and called on Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa to take responsibility for the shooting.

It said that police should have never used live ammunition on demonstrators.
