CAPE TOWN – Police have the will and capacity to fight gangsterism, Western Cape Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer said on Tuesday.
The top cop and other senior South African Police Service (SAPS) officials briefed Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police about recent gang activity in the province.
But some committee members indicated they were disappointed with the presentation.
The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP)’s Kenneth Meshoe felt the strategy lacked specific details on how to eradicate gang activity.
He also indicated the briefing sounded similar to one made by former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi.
Lamoer said they were unable to provide specific details due to the sensitivity of operations, but he assured the panel that officials are determined to rid the Western Cape of gangsterism.
On Monday, four suspected gang members were killed in Ravensmead.
