Drunk driving cop faces dismissal

A cop who killed 2 people in a drunk driving accident could face dismissal if found guilty.

Alcohol at a liquor store.

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape traffic authorities said on Monday they have launched an investigation after an off-duty officer was arrested for drunk driving at the scene of a fatal collision.

Two people died and two others were injured in the crash near Hawston, in the Overberg on the R43.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the officer also faces a charge of culpable homicide.

“From the department’s side, we have already started the process after which the disciplinary hearing will start. During the investigation, we will make a decision as to what needs to be done next.”

Africa added that no official is above the law and the necessary steps will be taken if the drunken driving officer is found guilty.

“Traffic officers are not above the law. If the officer is found guilty he will be dismissed.”
