Court to rule on Employment Equity case

CAPE TOWN - The Labour Court will on Friday rule on an application lodged by trade union Solidarity against the Correctional Services Department’s Employment Equity (EE) policy. 

The union approached the court in a bid to stop the department form hiring somebody to fill a vacant post.

Christopher February unsuccessfully applied for the post and claims his application was rejected because of his race.

The latest EE plan was introduced in June 2011.

Solidarity lawyer Greda Engelbrecht said the department implemented EE on national guidelines, resulting in discrimination against coulered people.  

Department lawyer Bantobonke Tokote dismissed the claim.

He said February failed to reapply for the job when it was re-advertised.
