SOWETO - ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe on Tuesday said South Africa should not have to wait for as long as Afrikaners did to run the country's biggest companies.

He made the comments at a political conference in Soweto, Johannesburg.

Mantashe said it took a long time for Afrikaner capital to make serious inroads during apartheid.

He said after 40 years in power, Afrikaner capital controlled only 10 percent of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).

He said this was particularly felt in mining sector.

“They [Afrikaners] couldn’t produce a single CEO in mining. All the Afrikaner CEOs you saw were appointed after 1994.”

Mantashe said South Africa cannot afford to wait as long for black CEOs to be produced.
