PRETORIA - Two children were killed and around 1000 people evacuated following a burst water pipe at an informal settlement close to Mamelodi in Pretoria on Monday.

The Tshwane emergency services are on the scene with a search and rescue mission.

One person was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Emergency service spokesperson Johan Pieterse said their rescues mission is being hampered by the heavy flood in the area.

"Hans Strijdom Drive is closed from Hinterland Avenue to Pretoria Avenue. Traffic will be affected as the road will only be opened later on Monday."

Motorists were asked to use alternative routes.

Pieterse said they will soon be announcing which suburbs will be affected by the burst water pipe.

He added that residents were given shelter in a nearby hall.

“We will also be arranging food and other logistics.”
