PRETORIA - Hundreds of students at the Tshwane University of Technology’s main campus on Friday vacated the premises following a violent protest.

There was a heavy police presence to ensure the students left campus peacefully.

Students had until 7:30am to vacate the Pretoria West campus and students were not allowed to go back to their residencies.

Lectures were also suspended.

TUT management reached the decision following violent protests over financial exclusion.

The demonstrations were led by the Student Representative Council.

According to officials, property was damaged at three campuses.

Students who come from as far as Venda and KwaZulu-Natal were waiting for transport to return home.
