JOHANNESBURG – Union leaders on Wednesday arrived at the volatile Marikana mine to address protesting workers.

At least 10 people were killed in clashes at the North West mine after alleged union rivalry.

Officials from the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (ACMU) arrived in the area on Wednesday.

But demonstrators said they simply want salary increases.

After spending most of the day in meetings, union officials returned to address hundreds of mineworkers who are still gathered on a hilltop.

Police escorted them to the group where they tried to negotiate a truce.

Demonstrators were armed with spears and pangas.

Police said they will not leave the area until the workers were disarmed.
