JOHANNESBURG - Two police officers were killed in violent clashes at Lonmin's Marikana mine in the North West on Monday, bringing the death toll to six.
Violent clashes erupted between National Union of Mineworkers (Num) and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) members over the weekend.
It is understood the group dispersed shortly after the two officers were killed.
Two security guards were burnt to death on Saturday and officials discovered the bodies of two employees on Monday.
One worker was shot and the other hacked to death.
Lonmin CEO Bernard Mokwena said it is not clear what sparked the violence.
“Until I am given grievances or a memorandum, I do not want to speculate. My only conclusion now is this is this is criminal.”
Earlier on Monday, it was revealed that one of the victims was shot five times in the upper body.
Police were deployed to the area and will continue patrolling through the night.
