JOHANNESBURG – Around 100 illegally built shacks were demolished in Marlboro, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) said on Monday.
A string of evictions have occurred in the area over the past few months, some of which turned violent.
In June, a police car was torched and live rounds were fired in clashes between officers and residents.
JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said Monday’s evictions took place without any problems.
“More shacks were demolished and we are still waiting for figures.”
Mamonyane said the JMPD is tasked with enforcing eviction orders.
