PRETORIA – Nolan Schoeman and Marissa Rudman lied about beating their two-month-old baby to protect each other, Judge Cynthia Pretorius ruled on Monday.

Earlier, the couple appeared in the North Gauteng High Court where they were found guilty of murdering baby Wade back in 2009.

Rudman was released on bail and will return to court for sentencing later in 2012.

Pretorius found that as Wade's mother, Rudman had a responsibility to protect him, but chose to protect her former partner instead.

The judge also accepted evidence that Schoeman punched the infant in the head.

Medical evidence showed that despite the head trauma, the little boy previously sustained broken arms and rib fractures.

The judge said these injuries were clearly visible, but the parents did nothing about them until it was too late.

Pretorius said evidence against the pair was overwhelming.

She dismissed claims that they had no knowledge of the injuries.
