US and Turkey plan for Syria

United States and Turkey said a no fly zone could be a viable option.

JOHANNESBURG - The United States and Turkey on Saturday agreed to expand operational planning for Syria as violence in the country's uprising against president Bashar al-Assad continues.

Both countries say a no fly zone could be a viable option.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Turkey to discuss efforts to end the violence that has killed thousands of Syrian people since March 2011.

She said Syria is in desperate need of a transition plan.

“Today we met to discuss what the United States and Turkey can do together, along with international partners and our friends inside and outside of Syria to respond to this growing humanitarian and political crisis.”

Meanwhile, Germany's spy chief Gerhard Schindler said al-Assad's government appears to be in its final phase, as its army has been depleted by casualties.

His statement follows an explosion during fresh violence between government troops and rebels in central Damascus.
