More service delivery protests - Gugulethu

Demonstrators in Gugulethu are protesting over service delivery this morning.

Service Delivery Protests

CAPE TOWN - Police are monitoring a number of hotspots between Gugulethu and Khayelitsha, where protesters have gathered on this morning.

Police say more than 500 protesters took to the streets earlier this morning and started burning tyres on the road.

As a result the N2 has been closed between the R300 and Duynefontien Road in both directions.

On Borcherds Quarry Road in Gugulethu a menacing looking crowd has gathered and blockaded the road.

At one stage a fire was seen burning in the middle of the normally quiet road.

Shots could be heard with police trying to disperse demonstrators.

A section of the N2 has also been blocked off as a police precaution.

A traffic officer directing traffic on the highway said he was not sure how serious the situation was or would become but he added authorities were not taking any chances
