JOHANNESBURG - Government officials are misinterpreting the law when they claim VIP protection units members are allowed to exceed the speed limit when transporting ministers, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Friday.
On Thursday, government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi said the National Road Traffic Act allowed police officers to speed in cases involving civil protection.
He said police officers were engaging in civil protection by protecting ministers.
Manyi said fines would be set aside.
But DA Parliamentarian Ian Ollis said government is misreading the law.
“If somebody’s life is on the line, then that is a crisis. A minister or deputy minister going to a cocktail function does not constitute an emergency.”
