Some eyebrows have been raised about President Jacob Zuma's decision to temporarily appoint Major General Nhlanhla Sibusiso Mkhwanazi to fill in for National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele.
Cele was suspended with full pay pending an inquiry into the dodgy lease deals involving two police headquarters.
Mkhwanazi has experience in the police's Special Task Force Unit but has only been a Major General for a relatively short period of time.
He has been promoted above several deputy national commissioners to act in Cele's position.
A high ranking officer who was shocked by the appointment has described Mkhwanazi as arrogant and having an over inflated opinion of his own self-worth.
However, it is thought that Zuma does not want to create expectations and has appointed him until a permanent commissioner is in place or Cele returns to office.
