The Eyewitness News Breaking News alerts is a free service to keep you up to date with breaking news. Once you’ve registered for the service we’ll SMS you when there is a major breaking news story.

Here are some frequently asked questions about Eyewitness News Breaking News alerts.

How do I register?

Registering for Eyewitness News Breaking News SMS alerts is really easy. Just follow these steps:

  1. SMS the word NEWS to 33EWN (33396). This SMS will cost you R1.50.
  2. You’ll be sent an SMS requesting you to send your first name, and your ID number to 33EWN (33396) to complete your registration. This SMS is also charged at R1.50. So the total charge is R3.00.
  3. You are now fully registered, and will be included on the database for Breaking News SMS’s from Eyewitness News. There is no charge to you when a Breaking News SMS is sent by Eyewitness News to your phone, so this is not a subscription service.

What happens with my personal information?

Your personal information stays private. Eyewitness News is talking to you and nothing is given to 3rd parties.

Will I be bombarded with loads of spam mail if I sign up?

No – your information is not given out – Eyewitness News breaking news alerts is a free service (apart from the registration) and we will only communicate with you about Eyewitness News content. You are able to unsubscribe from any such notifications at any time. You can just SMS the word UNSUBSCRIBE to 33EWN to unsubscribe. (Note: unsubscribe means we’ll stop sending you the breaking news messages , whereas DEREGISTER closes your account, and means you’re no longer a member of the Eyewitness News family.)

Can I deregister?

Yes you can. Unfortunately, this means your account will be closed, and you’ll no longer be a member of the Eyewitness News family. To deregister, SMS your ID number and the word DEREGISTER to 33396.

How much do EWN Breaking News alerts cost?

The only cost is the SMS to register. This is a total of R3.00 (two SMSes charged at R1.50 each). From then on membership is free, and you do not get charged when a Breaking News alert is SMSed to your mobile phone.

What happens when I change my cellphone number?

Your cellphone number is essentially your membership number with Eyewitness News, so it’s an important thing to tell us about. Notify us by SMSing your ID number and name - from your new phone - to 33EWN (33396). The system will automatically move your details to your new number. Note, you cannot change your ID number on your EWN account.

How do I get more help?
