  • Shalin Bhagwan, Head of Fixed Income

    Shalin Bhagwan is head of fixed income and is responsible for both the fixed income team and risk management solutions for institutional clients including pension funds and insurers. He was previously Head of UK Liability Driven Investments (LDI) for AXA Investment Managers. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries and graduated with a BSc (Honours in Actuarial Science and Statistics) from the University of Cape Town.

  • Paolo Senatore, Chief Investment Officer

    Paolo Senatore is the chief investment officer of Ashburton Investments. Paolo has 18 years’ industry experience and began his career in 1995 when he joined RMB gaining exposure to a number of areas within the bank. Paolo holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand.

  • Lesiba Ledwaba, Fund Manager

    Lesiba Ledwaba is a fund manager at Ashburton Investments responsible for Listed Property and is co-Fund Manager for the Balanced Fund. He joined the company in 2012 and has 10 years’ experience in the investment industry. Lesiba graduated with a BCom degree in 2002 from the University of the Witwatersrand. He also holds a Financial Markets and Instruments National Diploma from the Academy of Financial Markets.

  • Nkareng Mpobane, Fund Manager

    Nkareng Mpobane is a fund manager at Ashburton Investments. She has 10 years’ experience in the investment industry. As of January 2016, she was appointed to the Head of Financials role for the SA Investment Process, responsible for all research analysis within this sector. Nkareng has a BCom degree in Economics from the University of the Witwatersrand.

  • Mark Appleton, Head of Multi Asset and Strategy (SA)

    Mark Appleton is South African head of multi asset and strategy at Ashburton Investments with a primary focus of tactical asset allocation. He has over 31 years’ of investment management experience. Mark has earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Economics from the University of the Witwatersrand and a post graduate Diploma in Financial Planning from the University of the Free State. He is also a CFA charterholder.

  • Kathy Davey, Africa Equity Analyst

    Kathy Davey began her career as an equity research analyst covering listed Pan-European Retail stocks at Bear Stearns International in the UK in 2007. She subsequently moved with her team to Cenkos Securities, where she continued to cover the Retail sector from London. In 2010, Kathy moved back to South Africa, where she joined Absa Capital/Barclays to cover the South African listed retail sector. Kathy joined Ashburton Investments in South Africa in February 2013 as an Equity Research Analyst for the African Equity Opportunities Fund. She has a Bachelor of Commerce (IT and Accounting) degree from The University of the Witwatersrand, a Masters of Professional Accounting degree from the University of Southern Queensland, and is a CFA charter holder.

  • Jonathan Schiessl, Head of Equities

    Jonathan Schiessl is Chief Investment Officer within its international investment team and has responsibility for the firm’s global investment fund range and portfolio management services. Ranked in the top 5 best performing managers for India equity funds globally in the Citywire list published in December 2015, Jonathan, also AAA-rated by Citywire, is also the lead manager for the Fund. Schiessl joined Ashburton in 2000 and has 20 years’ experience in the investment industry following a Social Science (Hons) degree, specialising in Economics, from the University of Hertfordshire.

  • Wayne McCurrie, Fund Manager

    Wayne McCurrie joined Ashburton Investments as a Senior Portfolio Manager in October 2016. Wayne joined Ashburton Investments from Momentum Investments where he was responsible for managing various retirement fund portfolios. His career started in the late eighties when he worked at Lifegro Limited as a Management Accountant. He then moved on to join Sage, before rejoining the FirstRand Group in 2004 as Managing Director of Momentum International Multi-Managers. Wayne holds a B Compt (Hons) degree and is a C.A.(SA).

  • Arno Lawrenz, Head of Fixed Income Portfolio Management

    Arno Lawrenz is Head of Portfolio Management for the Fixed Income team. He was co-founder, shareholder and Chief Investment Officer of Atlantic Asset Management. Arno has over 24 years of investment experience and was previously Head of Fixed Interest at both Old Mutual Investment Group (SA) and at Coronation Fund Managers, where he won Morningstar and Raging Bull awards for investment performance. He also has previous experience in product development, life company asset-liability management, FX-trading and quantitative modelling. Arno is known for innovation in the fixed income markets, most notably for the introduction of what has become known as flexible or enhanced income funds, as well as being amongst the pioneers in the use of credit in fixed income in South Africa, at a time when the corporate bond market barely existed.

  • Rob Hamer, Head of Alternative Assets

    Rob Hamer is Head of Alternatives at Ashburton Investments. He joined the Structured Finance division of RMB in 1996. He was appointed Co-Head of Structured Finance in 2003, Co-Head of Debt Capital Markets in 2006 and thereafter Co-Head of the Investment Banking division in 2008. Prior to joining RMB, Rob completed his articles with PriceWaterhouseCoopers where he was an audit manager. Rob graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a BCom Honours degree and a Masters of Commerce degree, has a Higher Diploma in Taxation from the University of Johannesburg, and is a is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants, CA (SA) and ACA (UK).

  • Paul Clark, Fund Manager

    Paul Clark is a Fund Manager at Ashburton Investments. He joined Ashburton Investments South Africa in 2012 to set up and manage an Africa Fund for the FirstRand Group. Paul started his investment career with Standard Corporate and Merchant Bank’s Asset Management division where he served as a Research Analyst and Specialist Unit Trust Fund Manager for two years. He subsequently joined HSBC Equities South Africa as an Equities Analyst for five years. Paul then joined the African Alliance Group in 2004 as Head of Research and was instrumental in the launch of the Africa Pioneer Fund in June 2007. He was the lead Fund Manager on the fund until December 2011. Paul holds a BEng degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch as well as a BCom degree in Accounting from the University of the Witwatersrand. Paul is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder.
