FPB tribunal reclassifies controversial film 'Inxeba'

JOHANNESBURG - The Film and Publication Board Appeal Tribunal has overturned the age restriction for the controversial film Inxeba, taking it from 16 LS to x18 with sex, language, nudity, violence and prejudice.

This means the movie can only be distributed from designated adult premises and can no longer be screened at cinemas.

The movie was suspended at some cinemas in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape after protests, with some saying that it was an insult to Xhosa rituals.

In a series of tweets, the tribunal explained why the movie was reclassified.

"The complaints were largely based on the perceived cultural insensitivity and distortion of the Xhosa circumcision tradition (Ulwaluko), strong language in the film."
