HARARE - Opposition officials in Zimbabwe are reporting that a former top official Roy Bennett and his wife Heather have been killed in a helicopter crash.

Details are sketchy but it’s understood the crash was in North America on Wednesday.

Zimbabweans have been expressing their sadness on social media over the death of Roy and Heather Bennett.

The couple are said to have died in a helicopter accident, but at this stage it’s not been confirmed exactly where this happened.

Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) vice president Nelson Chamisa said the accident occurred in Canada, but other reports say the accident may have been in New Mexico.

According to the New York Times, Bennett, his wife and three other people - the pilot, co-pilot and another passenger - died in the crash. One person reportedly survived but is seriously injured.

Bennett was a popular MP for the mountainous Chimanimani district in eastern Zimbabwe, and also served as the MDC’s treasurer.

He went into exile in South Africa nearly 10 years ago after years of struggling against the government of Robert Mugabe.
