CAPE TOWN - A three-year-old girl is fighting for her life after she was hit caught in the crossfire of an apparent gang shooting in Elsies River.

A suspected gangster was shot and killed in the shooting in Leonsdale on Thursday.

There have been no arrests.

The girl has been shot in the mouth and has been in and out of surgery.

She is in a critical condition, with her mother at her bedside at a Cape Town hospital.

Elsies River community policing forum chair Imrahn Mukkadam said: “They’re claiming victims on daily basis in our community, it’s totally unacceptable.”

Earlier this year, 13 people were shot in one street in Leonsdale.

Three people died.

'GANG-RELATED SHOOTING'

Community safety MEC Dan Plato has confirmed the shooting in which the three-year-old girl was wounded in Elsies River is gang related.

Plato visited the child's family on Thursday night.

“The gangsters involved I know. It is the ‘Terribles' and the ‘Bad boys’ gangs and they’re fighting for drug turf. She was rushed to the hospital last night when I visited the family. Her condition was still very critical.”
