Zwane on Gupta family: ‘I meet many people’
The Mineral Resources Minister on Wednesday morning faced questions from MPs about his relationship with the Gupta family and state capture allegations.
CAPE TOWN - Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has hit out at what he calls a "trial by public opinion" by opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), claiming he has saved thousands of jobs in the mining industry.
In a statement, Zwane called on opposition members of Parliament's mineral resources committee not to abuse it to further their "narrow personal interests”.
In his statement, Zwane says it is "time-wasting" to have opposition members use the committee "to wage personal battles against him" claiming his international travels are aimed at bringing investment and have saved "thousands of jobs" in the sector.
Earlier, Zwane denied doing favours for the Guptas but sidestepped tough questions, claiming that because the Public Protector's state capture report is before the courts on review the issue was sub-judice
"Why this family? Why is this portfolio committee just interested in my meeting with just one family? I've said it before, I meet many people and in Dubai, I’ve met some interesting people, including business people from South Africa.”
