Mbalula praises SAPS for arrests in ‘airport-following’ robberies case
Six suspects were arrested after police received a tip-off about a security vehicle following a sedan travelling from OR Tambo International Airport.
JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has congratulated South African Police Service (SAPS) members for arresting several suspects in connection with what has been dubbed the “airport-following” robberies, committed in and around the Johannesburg area.
Six suspects were arrested this weekend after police received a tip-off about a security vehicle following a sedan travelling from OR Tambo International Airport.
Criminals involved in these robberies usually follow groups from the airport to their next destination, where they rob them.
Mbalula says a recent change in the police leadership at the airport appears to be yielding positive results.
His spokesperson Vuyo Mhaga said: “We’ve had good successes since the team was set up in July, obviously with the hiccup of the Dutch and Iran tourists.”
