Education Dept. apologises for Ivory Park school stampede
The department says the crush, in which 19 pupils were injured, happened when pupils rushed towards a science exhibition at the school.
JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Education Department has described Friday afternoon's stampede at a primary school in Ivory Park as an unfortunate incident and has apologised to parents.
Nineteen pupils between grade four and seven were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to moderate.
The department says the crush happened when pupils rushed towards a science exhibition at the school.
Spokesperson Steve Mabona said: "And we will then apologise to parents because as educators we want to educate, not harm, their children and we are convinced that all of them, they will be discharged.”
