Expelled EFF councilors: Give proof that we voted with ANC

JOHANNESBURG - The lawyer representing the six expelled Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillors says the party needs to prove that they voted with the African National Congress, to show their dismissal was not politically motivated.

The red berets decided to sack six of its nine councillors from the Mogale City Municipality, saying they defied the party's decision to boycott the budget vote and sided with the ANC.

The councillors went to court to stop the Independent Electoral Commission from filling the vacancies pending the EFF's disciplinary processes, but the court has dismissed their application, saying it's not urgent.

Advocate Katleho Mofokeng who's representing the sacked EFF councillors says he's filing a new application in court on Friday to ensure his clients' names remain on the municipality's proportional representation list.

Mofokeng says the councillors are appealing their expulsion because the EFF didn't give them an opportunity to state their case.

More importantly, he says the councillors didn't vote on the day of the budget council meeting.

“They requested the EFF to provide them with the proof that they voted with the ANC.”

The EFF has welcomed the decision by the court to dismiss the councillor's urgent application on Thursday.
