JOHANNESBURG - Pan African Resources says its R1.7 billion construction project has been halted in Evander since Tuesday due to a violent protest by community members.

The company says its workers were assaulted by some of the demonstrators.

The community group is demanding jobs and business opportunities linked to the project which aims to produce gold from mine dumps by next year.

Human resources manager Anthony Maki said: “Some of their demands that they are demanding I think we are currently doing. Because their main grip was around local procurement. We are currently busy doing local procurement. And also employment, I mean we are employing mostly local people around the area.”
