‘Women easily recruited to transport drugs across countries’
NGO Locked Up says it's found women are easily recruited to transport drugs across countries due to their vulnerability.
CAPE TOWN - Police have arrested five drug mules at Cape Town International Airport in the space of just a few weeks.
This week, a man who had swallowed more than a hundred bullets of cocaine was apprehended at the airport
Over the past month, four female drug mules were also arrested.
They arrived on separate days but flew on the same Angolan Airline from Luanda.
The women had swallowed substantial amounts of cocaine-filled parcels.
Local NGO Locked Up's Patricia Gerber says it's found women are easily recruited to transport drugs across countries due to their vulnerability.
“On the other hand, we’ve also seen elderly people in their 50s and 60s being arrested. The unfortunate part is that South Africa doesn’t have enough employment for the people that are looking for work.”
The latest drug mule arrested this week was taken to a medical facility where 122 parcels of cocaine wrapped in latex were extracted.
