DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal Agriculture MEC Themba Mthemb u says they will not surrender to criminals who are threatening officials with the aim of securing tenders.

He’s issued the warning just days after the department’s Jerry Mfusi’s home came under attack.

His guards managed to fend off the gunmen but one of his protectors was critically wounded in the confrontation.

Mthembu says they believe the attack on Mfusi’s home is linked to the death threats he’s recently received.

“Most of them that have been identified, point to people who are demanding to be favoured for awarding of tenders.”

Mthembu says this is not the first time the department has had to deal with these kinds of threats.

“The kind of tenders that we are talking about is the security tenders, as well as fertiliser tenders.”
The agriculture MEC says police have been notified about the continued intimidation.

Authorities are yet to respond to these claims.
