Faith Muthambi on nepotism claims: I’ve done nothing wrong
The Public Service and Administration Minister confirmed to MPs on Wedesday that nine family members were employed to work in her office.
CAPE TOWN - Minister Faith Muthambi has told Parliament she doesn’t see anything wrong with hiring relatives to work for her.
The Public Service and Administration Minister confirmed to MPs on Wednesday that nine family members were employed to work in her office without the positions being advertised.
Her department says regulations permitted the minister to hire support staff without following regular procedures because their contracts are linked to her term of office.
“I’ve done everything in terms of the prescript. I’ve done nothing wrong.”
Democratic Alliance MP Yusuf Cassim was flabbergasted by Muthambi’s reasons for hiring relatives.
“Now it’s as if it's justifiable that individuals who are connected can be employed.”
Economic Freedom Fighters’ parliamentarian Mmabatho Mokause wanted to know whether former SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng’s daughter also scooped a job.
“Is it true or not that there’s a public servant in this department who is Hlaudi Motsoeneng’s daughter?”
The African National Congress’ Madala Ntombela hit back at the opposition.
“It is an exercise of clutching at straws and it is bound to fail.”
Muthambi promised to respond to their questions in writing because the meeting had already run over time.
