Farmers battle Barkely East blaze
Over 40,000 hectares of land have been burnt affecting at least 24 farms.
CAPE TOWN - Farmers in the Barkely East region are battling runaway fires.
The fire started over the weekend in the Lady Grey area and spread south over the Witteberg Mountain towards the Southern Cape town.
Over 40,000 hectares of land have been burnt, affecting at least 24 farms.
Grazing at 12 farms has been completely destroyed.
Farmer and fire protection officer Piet Stuyn says livelihoods of approximately 600 people have been affected.
“In total, we were involved with 40 farmers and about 160 neighbours. We did most of the work and we had three teams from Working on Fire helping us with their spotter plane on standby.”
