ANC seeks legal help to ensure Mashaba no confidence motion goes ahead

The ANC says it is seeking legal assistance to ensure a vote of no confidence against Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba still goes ahead and is held in secret.

JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) says it is seeking legal assistance to ensure a vote of no confidence against Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba still goes ahead and is held in secret.

The programming committee of the City of Johannesburg on Tuesday deemed the ANC’s motion of no confidence against the mayor and the Speaker inadmissible.

While the ANC in Johannesburg insists that the city is deteriorating under Mashaba’s administration, the Democratic Alliance (DA) says the motion was frivolous.

MMC for Development Planning Funzela Ngobeni says that while the Constitutional Court ruling gave the powers to the National Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete to decide on a secret ballot, the rules of council don’t allow for such.

“We’re asking the ANC to change their motion so that it can be aligned to the rules of council. There’s a stark contrast to the rules of the National Assembly.”

However, the ANC's Jolidee Matongo says that the DA is flexing its muscle in council through its numbers.

Ngobeni says that while the motion has failed, they will be able to overcome it should the ANC try again.
