Kenyatta warns Odinga of impeachment if he wins poll

Kenyatta says Jubilee, which has most members in both houses of parliament, can make amendments to the constitution based on its numbers.

PRETORIA - President Uhuru Kenyatta says even if opposition leader Raila Odinga wins next month’s repeat poll, his ruling Jubilee Party has the numbers to impeach him in less than three months.

Kenyatta didn’t elaborate on the reasons that would lead to the impeachment.

Kenyatta says Jubilee, which has most members in both houses of parliament, can make amendments to the constitution based on its numbers.

In the National Assembly, with over 200 members, Jubilee is only 13 members shy of the two-thirds majority needed to change the constitution.

Both the candidates in the ballot also ratcheted up the temperature in public speeches on Monday and the opposition said it would boycott the opening of parliament.

Politics in Kenya often follows ethnic lines and has in the past erupted into deadly violence, making the authorities sensitive to perceived inflammatory statements.

Reported instances of hate speech have risen sharply since the surprise ruling on 1 September, the first of its kind in Africa, when the supreme court voided Kenyatta’s re-election citing irregularities in the tallying process.

On Monday, Kenyan police detained a ruling party lawmaker and a former opposition senator for alleged hate speech.
