'Private donations to political parties must be made public'

ANC deputy chief whip Doris Dlakude says her party is in favour of full public disclosure of all donations made directly to a political party.

PARLIAMENT - The African National Congress (ANC) has reiterated a call for all private donations made directly to political parties to be publicly disclosed.

Parliament’s ad hoc committee on party political funding has on Friday been mulling how such a proposal can be implemented practically.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has suggested only donations above a certain threshold be disclosed to the public.

ANC deputy chief whip Doris Dlakude says her party is in favour of full public disclosure of all donations made directly to a political party.

She’s suggested the disclosures be made to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) which would be responsible for making the information public before the end of a calendar year.

“As the ANC, we are saying we don’t have anything to hide, so that’s why we are making this proposal.”

Chairperson of the Committee Vincent Smith has agreed.

The proposal has also been supported by the Economic Freedom Fighters.

Drawing from international examples, the DA’s Alf Lees says the party is not against disclosing its donations but adds that these can only be publicly revealed under specific circumstances.
