Plato: Alcohol industry needs to help govt fight substance abuse
Western Cape Community Safety MEC Dan Plato says the alcohol industry has a responsibility to help government in educating communities.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Community Safety MEC Dan Plato says that the industry will need to help government in fighting alcohol and drug abuse.
This comes after alcohol and drug abuse were highlighted as the main drivers behind Cape Town's high violent crime rate.
The Urban Safety Report, which was released on Wednesday, reveals the Mother City is South Africa's murder capital.
Plato says that the provincial government's Alcohol-Related Harms Reduction policy game changer is one of its major initiatives to tackle the scourge of substance abuse in a bid to lower crime rates.
But he says that the alcohol industry has a responsibility to help government in educating communities.
"The Western Cape government’s point of view is that the industry must play a role, specifically an educational role, because they're making millions and millions of rands out of alcohol. What is the give back specifically to the disadvantaged communities, to teach people to use alcohol in a responsible manner?"
