JOHANNESBURG - The world's leading artificial intelligence experts are sounding the alarm on killer robots.

South African-born Tesla boss Elon Musk is among a group of 116 founders of robotics and artificial intelligence companies who are calling on the United Nations to ban autonomous weapons.

“It is difficult to appreciate just how far artificial intelligence has advanced and how far it is advancing. Because we have a double-exponential at work in we have an exponential in capability and software talent that is going into AI.”

In an open letter published on Monday, the experts warn that "lethal autonomous weapons threaten to become the third revolution in warfare".
