CAPE TOWN - South Africa's golden voice Levy Sekgapane's win at a prestigious global competition will be a boost for the country's opera scene.

Sekgapane has followed in the footsteps of Pretty Yende by clinching the top prize at the Operalia World Opera Competition, held in Kazakhstan this year.

Sekgapane, who hails from Kroonstad, beat hundreds of talented opera singers from around the world.

His singing teacher Hanna van Schalkwyk said, “Pretty Yende won the Operalia a few years ago and to now have two people from South Africa win it is amazing.”
