CAPE TOWN - All work and classes have been suspended at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) campuses for Tuesday and Wednesday.

This comes after protests by insourced workers and students at CPUT’s Bellville campus on Monday.

Protesters are apparently demanding that recently insourced workers receive full benefits.

University management will hold a meeting to assess the situation.

In a statement, acting vice chancellor Chris Nhlapo says that they've decided to suspend classes to ensure the safety of all workers and students.

“After mammoth all day meetings with students and insourced workers, I have consulted with the chair of council. In the interests of the safety of staff and students, we agreed to suspend all activities, which includes classes and work for tomorrow 25 July and Wednesday 26 July. Council will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss the issue of insourced workers and their contracts.”
