JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg says it’s looking for ways to eradicate illegal dumping sites as it costs the municipality more than R150 million to clean them up annually.

The municipality on Tuesday hosted a ‘waste dialogue’ to discuss sustainable ways to deal with waste challenges facing the city.

Illegal dumping sites remain one of the city's biggest contributors to the crisis.

MMC for environment and infrastructure Nico de Jager explains: “We’ve had discussions on long-term solutions so that we can solve this problem for energy purposes, creating sustainable solutions for the energy market.”
