CAPE TOWN - The Speaker of an Eastern Cape municipality who was gunned down in Fort Beaufort was apparently aware of a plot to assassinate her.

Thozama Njobe, an African National Congress (ANC) councillor at the Raymond Mhlaba Municipality died in hospital on Monday night after being shot several times.

She was with another person driving from a gathering in New Town when they were attacked by a gunman.

Her companion was unhurt.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane says earlier in July someone had informed staff in Njobe's office about the plot to kill her.

“The person was saying he was part of the plot but had pulled out, she then sent some of her colleagues to report the incident to police but what was worrying was that the police never made a follow up on the matter.”

At the time of the information, Njobe was in Johannesburg for the ANC's policy conference.
