I told you so? Bell Pottinger CEO denies being warned about Guptas

The agency's co-founder Lord Timothy Bell has reportedly said he had warned the agency to not work with Oakbay.

CAPE TOWN - Bell Pottinger's CEO has denied claims that he was warned about working with the Gupta-owned Oakbay company before taking on the account.

The agency's co-founder Lord Timothy Bell has reportedly said he had warned the agency to not work with Oakbay.

Lord Bell left the agency last year following health issues, but he reportedly claims the Oakbay account also played a role.

Bell Pottinger has been slated by the South African public for allegedly stirring racial tensions in some of its campaigns for the Gupta family, something it has since apologised for.

Lord Bell has told online publication PR Week that he was part of the Bell Pottinger party who initially met with Oakbay representatives, including the Gupta family.

According to him, he reportedly warned the CEO, James Henderson, and other colleagues to not take on the brief, saying the account was “smelly”.

Lord Bell further rubbished the statement put out by Bell Pottinger which claims management had been misled about the work done for Oakbay.

Henderson has now fired back, refuting the claims to Eyewitness News. He says he “completely disagrees” with the co-founder's “version of events”.

In a statement, the agency reiterates an ongoing investigation will set out the key facts with the findings of the probe set to be published soon.

The lead manager on the account has since been dismissed and three other employees have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
