CAPE TOWN – Child rights group Matla a Bana has commended the 55-year-old rape survivor for reporting the incident after four decades.

Earlier this week, a Kraaifontein pastor was sentenced to 10 years for two counts of rape committed 47 years ago.

During sentencing proceedings Carl Baron appealed for clemency because he’s a respected member of the community.

The Emmanuel Pentecostal Mission church pastor was found guilty of raping his victim who was eight-years-old at the time in an isolated area along old Modderdam Road in 1970.

He was also convicted of raping her during a church gathering in Oudtshoorn later that year.

Matla a Bana’s Monique Strydom has called on other victims to report sexual assaults even if they date back several years.

“The victory lies in the sentence and the success of the case and the fact that people know now that people can’t get away. It’s never too late to report.”

She’s welcomed the sentence handed down to Baron.
