‘No sanctions in Parliament for Shivambu to face over comments’
EFF's Floyd Shivambu has been referred to Parliament's disciplinary committee for refusing to withdraw a comment last year.
JOHANNESBURG - The National Assembly's Secretary Masibulele Xaso says there are currently no guidelines for possible sanctions that Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) chief whip Floyd Shivambu may face.
Shivambu has been referred to Parliament's disciplinary committee for refusing to withdraw a comment last year that was declared unparliamentary.
During a motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma, Shivambu suggested that the president would kill his political opponents including members of his own party.
Shivambu is set to become the first Member of Parliament to face disciplinary steps in terms of stricter new rules adopted by Parliament last year.
Xaso says the rules do not stipulate sanctions at this stage.
“The way the new committee functions has been reviewed, we used to have it, then it was done away with and have been brought back. So some of the things are still going to be clarified in the course of the committee conducting its work.”
